Business Vocabulary
Those of us who have ever worked in Corporate America have probably been in a situation similar to this: as we stand in front of a hundred colleagues, trying to calm our nerves by imagining them naked, we realize we are at a loss for words: our business vocabulary has come to a dead end and we are drawing a blank. We stutter, we say “um,” we make a not-that-funny joke, we waste time by dropping our papers behind the podium and slowly picking them up, but nothing seems to work: our business vocabulary, or lack of business vocabulary, has killed our presentation. The crowd has gotten restless and we better start cleaning out our desk. While it might not go that far – you will probably still have a job after a failed presentation – the above example proves one thing: business vocabulary is not only important, it’s also essential. Having strong business communication skills allows you to do the most important thing: communicate effectively.
Whether you are giving a major presentation, or simply interviewing a candidate for a job, business vocabulary plays a role. Whether you are talking to a coworker about an impending merger or asking the laziest person in the office why they took the rest of the coffee and failed to make more, business vocabulary plays a role. Whether you are speaking to your boss about much needed time off or cold calling a potential client, business vocabulary plays a role. Whether you are taking a bigwig out for dinner and drinks or simply asking your secretary if you have any messages, business vocabulary plays a role. Whatever you are doing, if it involves business, it involves business vocabulary and if you improve your vocabulary you improve your standing in the workplace.
If there is one place you don’t want a breakdown in communication, it is in the office. Communication problems can lead to lost clients, lost projects, lost proposals, and lost money. This makes communication skills especially important and the key to this is simple: you must have a vast business vocabulary and a vast understanding of business vocabulary.
The more you comprehend, the less likely the wrong message will be sent. Business vocabulary is the key to making sure you say what you want to say, when you want to say it. Business vocabulary makes you an effective speaker, whether you are standing at the water cooler or in the center of the boardroom.
